orthotics. Fact is that those patients who have high arches don’t usually see a need for orthotics until later in life, compared with the flat foot patient. Several medical reasons exist for the “high arched foot” some are understood and others are not. The medical name used to describe a patient with very high arches is Cavo Varus. These patients have high arches almost from birth and are prone to many different medical conditions that are believed to be caused by the high configuration of their arches. They often suffer from sever hammertoes, claw toes, hallux rigidus, tendonitis, retro-calcaneal bursitis, muscles spasms of the leg, knee pain, and low back pain, all of these conditions are observed in patients with very high arches.
For the most part severe problems associated with very high arched feet are caused by an underlying neurological problem. Not so common anymore are those who had polio as children, these patients are usually left with extremely high arches. A somewhat rare condition know as Charot Marie Tooth disease or CMT is a genetic condition that although most common in males throughout family lines, can also be found passed down through females, this creates a progressive worsening of the condition that becomes an increasing problem as the patient ages. Other neurological conditions that cause high arches that can produce significant medical concerns are Freidricks Ataxia, and Peroneal Muscular Dystrophy. Most high arched feet do not have an obvious underlying neurological etiology and are then referred to as idiopathic cavo-varus foot types.
